This project was a continuing evolution of design while attempting to create a

candle lantern with four different yet interconnected themed sets of imagery.

I began with creating an overall panel frame evoking a tree with branches and

leaves.

I settled on a theme of four birds of prey representing dichotomies of of night

and day with an owl a falcon, and sea and sky with an osprey and an eagle.

I sketched out the outlines of the birds and created a them into vectors while

also creating backgrounds to represent the day, night, sea, and sky motifs.

The next details were inked details of the birds and a design on the bottom

base, for detailed etching with a laser cutter.

Another design element was an elderly woman’s face for the trunk of the tree

made in black to white gray scale to create a laser cut relief carved look.

The last piece were cut designs into paper inserts that let light through when

the rest would be diffused. After making several test cuts with plywood, I made

the final pieces out of blood wood and constructed them into the candle

lanterns adding paper inserts that were further laser cut with additional

elements that would only be best seen when the lantern was lit.
